Just eleven runners have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens, highlighted by the inclusion of several of the Autumn Carnival’s most exciting racing prospects.
Talented Queensland Rudy is targeting the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) this season, and will contest his second campaign start on Saturday after being confirmed in the 2015 Ajax Stakes final field.
Posting a commendable race record of seven wins and a further five minor place finishes over his 19 start career so far, Rudy returned to racing in slick form over a short spring and summer preparation; running second in each of the Qantac Handicap (1200m) and Padua College Handicap (1350m) before returning to the winner’s circle in the Listed Recognition Stakes (1630m) on November 29th.
Earning a trip south for the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on account of his slick form, Rudy was given little chance of success in betting markets in the days leading up to the summer feature, but secured ballot-free entry to the Doncaster Mile when hitting the line half a length ahead of I’m Imposing.
Having returned for a credible second in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) a fortnight ago, all signs point towards another competitive performance from Helen Page’s stable star this weekend.
Pornichet was particularly disappointing when fading the final straight for ninth in the Liverpool City Cup first-up, but is sure to be far-better for the competitive performance and step-up to 1500m this weekend.
Beginning his career in his native France before arriving in the care of Gai Waterhouse towards the end of spring, Pornichet placed a credible fourth in the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) in his Australian debut before charging home to win the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) a fortnight later.
While charged with overcoming the wide barrier 10, the Vespone entire with be partnered by in-form jockey Blake Shinn and will relish the ideal racing distance of 1500m.
Ninth Legion failed to figure in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) last time out, but is offered a great chance of returning to competitive form this weekend after being allocated the rails draw for the 2015 Ajax Stakes.
Securing six wins and seven minor place finishes from his 28 career starts, Ninth Legion returned to racing in slick form when taking out the Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) by close to two lengths on January 24th before running a close second to subsequent Group 1 winner Contributer in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on February 14th.
Red Excitement was unable to secure a sixth-consecutive race win when placing eighth in the Liverpool City Cup, but is likely to find ideal running position early from barrier 6 in the 2015 Ajax Stakes.
