Eleven classy runners have been confirmed to contest Saturday’s Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse; offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Having returned to the track in typically competitive form this season, Ninth Legion ($4.60) has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite in 2015 Ajax Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Rudy ($5.50), Red Excitement and San Diego; currently sharing the third line at a quote of $6 each.
Will Ninth Legion return to the winner’s circle in the 2015 Ajax Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Talented French import Pornichet was disappointing when ninth in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) first-up this time, but is sure to take value condition from the run and respond particularly well to the step-up to 1500m, and is therefore more than worth consideration for an Ajax Stakes bet at current odds. Purchased by Gai Waterhouse’s team prior to the 2014 Spring Carnival, Pornichet ran a credible fourth in the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) on debut on November 1st before charging home to take out the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) with ease a fortnight later.
Ninth Legion ($4.60)
Talented Team Hawkes runner Ninth Legion posted several impressive results over the Spring Carnival, and has returned in similarly slick form this season. Running third in each of the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m), Ninth Legion was unlucky to be checked early in the running of the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), but responded well to finish a credible fourth. Having taken out the Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) and finished second in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) before placing seventh in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) last time out, the son of Fastnet Rock is sure to respond well to a step-back in class this weekend and arguably offers punters the best value for money as a selection in an Ajax Stakes quinella or trifecta bet.
Talented Queenslander Rudy secured ballot-free entry to this year’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) when winning the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) over autumn, and appears to be on track for a standout autumn preparation. Posting a commendable race record of seven wins and five minor place finishes from his 19 career starts, the Red Dazzler gelding ran second in a pair of talent-rich Queensland sprint events leading upon resuming in late spring before taking out the Listed Recognition Stakes (1600m) a fortnight prior to the Villiers Stakes. Having placed second in the Liverpool City Cup first-up this time, all signs point towards another competitive performance from Rudy on Saturday.
