Fourteen runners remain in contention for Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse; offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Generalife has remained favourite in 2016 Ajax Stakes betting markets since Wednesday’s confirmation of a final field and has firmed to a quote of $5 with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Good Project ($5.50) and Rock Sturdy ($6).
Will Generalife justify favouritism and win the 2016 Ajax Stakes or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Good Project ($5.50)
Good Project has been a strong and consistent performer for Chris Waller through recent seasons and appears primed for a return to winning form in the Ajax Stakes, and at good odds. Failing to finish outside the first three in six starts through spring, the Not A Single Doubt gelding ran second to Malaguerra in the Lavazza Short Black (1400m) before breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) in Perth on November 21st. Having returned this time for a commendable third in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) a fortnight ago, Good Project will relish a step-up to 1500m in the Ajax Stakes.
Puccini has been a different horse since being transferred to the care of Darren Weir and appears as though he will line up for the Ajax Stakes in peak condition. A multiple Group 1 winner having taken out both the New Zealand Derby (2400m) in 2014 and the 2015 edition of the Thorndon Mile, Puccini clearly needed the run when tenth in the Ascot Racecourse Trophy (1400m) on February 20th but responded well with a strong run for third in the Group 3 TAB Rewards Stakes (1400m) on March 5th. Brett Prebble will take the ride on the son of Encosta De Lago from the ideal barrier 3.
Rock Sturdy ($6)
Consistent miler Rock Sturdy is perhaps the forgotten force in the 2016 Ajax Stakes field and could very well receive the run of the race from barrier 2. A typically strong performer for Joe Pride in spring, Rock Sturdy placed fifth in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) on October 17th; progressing to second in the Filante Handicap (1600m) before ending his campaign third in the featured Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on November 7th. Having resumed this time for second in the Liverpool City Cup, Rock Sturdy will lay a great account for himself once more in the Ajax Stakes.
